MEDIA TARGETING CHILDREN

Goal: The goal of this wiki space is to show people how much media targets children by gender and just in general. I feel as though people don't realize how bad this truly is so I really want to bring awareness to this subject. I really want to show people how much media influences children into wanting certain things which then makes parents buy certain things that most likely will be more expensive. I want to show the differences in how they advertise for boys and how they advertise for girls. As it says in our gendered lives books it says "Media encourage us to consume, In fact, some media analysts say that the primary purpose of media is to convince us we need to own more things, buy more products and services, spend, spend, spend" (Wood, 2013). I feel like this targets everybody but children in general just because they are so influenced by everything.

The video to the left shows how media targets children and how it targets children. This guy used this as his final project and he used his nephew for the video. I thought it was really interesting because it shows why he likes certain things such as him liking mcdonalds because the meal comes with a toy.

The video below has a whole bunch of junk food commercials that target children, theyre put on tv so children will buy these certain things. They get the childrens attention by filling it with cool effects so children will notice and be like "I want that" then throw a fit in the store if there mom won't buy it for them. this video really shows how much the media really does target children to want their products.

This video is one I really like because it has the little girl stating that they target girls by putting pink on things and boys don't buy pink. it says how some girls like superheros but the superheros are in the boys section, she just doesn't understand. This video shows the gender differences in marketing and how girls and boys when they are younger are pushed to like certain things. I feel like this is the perfect video to put on this page because it really shows how bad media seperates boys and girls. it shows that even this little girl doesn't understand the reason why girls things are pink and boys can't buy them, or how the superheros are in the boys section when girls like superheros too. This video is short but very informative to me and I would show it to anyone to show them how much gender really is seperated when we are little and that just makes it continue on to when they get older. an article I read states that "social learning theory indicates that children learn their appropriate sex-roles through observing the actions of others, as well as being either rewarded or punished for acting appropriately or inappropriately" (Smith, 1994). So its pretty much saying that children learn from media and that because of media is why we have such different sex roles.

Action:
What I plan on doing is holding a presentation on campus for mothers or anyone interested to show them how much media really does influence their childs views on their role as a child. I'm also going to talk about how much media influences children into wanting certain things.
